Obituary, Harriet Gladys Selfridge

 

Millerton – Harriet Gladys Selfridge, 96, a forty year resident of Millerton, NY, formerly of Pine Plains, NY, died peacefully on July 27, 2015 at Sharon Health Care Center in Sharon, CT, with her loving family by her side. Mrs. Selfridge had worked for many years as a seamstress in Red Hook, NY, and as an assembler in Pine Plains, NY. Mrs. Selfridge also operated a consignment and antique shop on Route 22 in Millerton for many years and worked at the Senior Nutrition Center in Millerton.

Born August 15, 1918 in Amenia, NY, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Gladys (Wheeler) Meissner. She attended and was a graduate of local area schools. On February 25, 1943 in Mississippi she married William Selfridge, Jr. Mr. Selfridge died May 30, 1962.

Harriet always enjoyed perusing local flea markets and working in her shop. Many of her longtime customers would still ask for “the little lady” when stopping at her antique shop on Route 22 across from Harney & Sons Tea Factory.

Harriet is survived by her sister, Shirley Flinn and her husband Russell of Millerton; three nieces, Denise Lamont and her husband Ken of Ancram, Susan Gyasi-Twum and her husband Kwab of Norwalk and Charlene Meissner and her husband Gerald of South Carolina; a nephew, Russell Flinn, Jr. and his wife Donna of Millerton; her sister in law, Patricia Meissner of South Carolina; a longtime companion, James Proper of Millerton and several great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband she was also predeceased by her brother Charles Meissner.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2015 from 1-3pm at  37 Park Avenue, Millerton, NY 12546. Funeral services will follow at 3pm at the funeral home.
