Formal Dedication of Bangall Post Office Official Historic Marker

Stanford Historical Society is pleased to announce that the Bangall Post Office has received designations that honor it as an important part of New York State history.

On Saturday, July 25, 2015, at 1:00, the Stanford Historical Society will hold a ceremony to commemorate the Bangall Post Office’s designation on the United States Nation registry of Historic Places. The ceremony will be at the Bangall Post Office and include keynote speakers who have played important roles in obtaining the designation.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and The United States National Park Service have awarded the post office historic designation, and it is now listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the New York State Register of Historic Places.

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America’s historic and archeological resources.

The society received a generous grant from The William G. Pomeroy Foundation to purchase the plaque which will be unveiled at the ceremony.

In addition, the society is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Bangall Post Office at its current site. In 1914, Thaddeus Knickerbocker, Bangall Postmaster from 1885 to 1889, acquired permission from landowner Irving Couse to erect a building on part of his property to become the hamlet’s new post office. A year later, the office opened, and Mr. Knickerbocker’s son Harrie was appointed postmaster.

The Stanford Historical Society welcomes the public to share in and witness this historical event on Saturday, July 25th.
