COLUMBIA SHERIFF’S OFFICE INVESTIGATES FATAL ACCIDENT IN TOWN OF GERMANTOWN

Columbia County Sheriff David P. Bartlett reports that Sheriff’s Patrols were dispatched by Columbia County 911 for a four vehicle accident at about 3:06pm this afternoon on State Route 9G, just south of Hover Avenue in the Town of Germantown.

Deputy Sheriff’s found that a 2007 Honda Silver Wing Scooter, operated by 24 year old Caitlin M. Briggs from Livingston, was traveling southbound on State Route 9G and for unknown reasons, traveled over into the northbound lane striking a 2006 Honda Pilot. The Honda Pilot, operated by 36 year old Herbert Rockwell of Schoharie, was traveling northbound and had one female passenger in his vehicle. Mr. Rockwell and his passenger were evaluated by Northern Dutchess Paramedics and released at the scene. Caitlin Briggs was pronounced dead at the scene by Columbia County Coroner James Bertram.

There were two other vehicles involved in this accident, which were southbound behind the scooter. A 2002 Toyota Rav4, operated by 24 year old Sophia Burgos from Chicago Illinois, and a 2009 Honda Accord, operated by 31 year old Lora Bagshaw of Germantown. Both vehicles were struck by debris and both operators were checked by EMS and released.

The accident is still under investigation by Sheriff’s Investigators, the Sheriff’s Accident/Incident Investigation Unit and Coroner Bertram.

NDP EMS and Germantown Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Investigating for the Sheriff’s Office are Sheriff David Bartlett, Lieutenant Wayne Lopez, Sr. Investigator William Foster, Sr. Investigator Mark Dunspaugh, Investigator Anthony Brahm, Investigator Reagan Anderson, Deputy Cindy Madison, and Deputy Peter Merante.
