Obituary, Eileen Tobin

Eileen Tobin, 92 years old of Poughquag, N.Y. Died peacefully at home on March 27, 2024.

Eileen was born in Lynbrook, NY in 1931. She was the fourth of eight children born to Irish immigrants Hannah (Griffin) and Joseph Grimes. Eileen worked as a telephone operator where she met the love of her life James J. Tobin. They married in 1955 and were blessed with seven children, the large family she desired. The family moved to Poughquag NY in 1976.

Eileen worked as a telephone operator at Marist College. She stayed active playing tennis until she was 86 years old. She was a champion bowler, an active gardener and a skilled crafter leaving a legacy of gorgeous quilts and needlepoint.  She was a faithful parishioner of St. John’s church and served as an extra ordinary minister, lecturer, CCD teacher and choir member. Eileen loved the outdoors and enjoyed being adventurous, joining her husband Jim on cruises and trips well into their 70s.

Eileen was preceded in death by her loving husband James J. Tobin, her beloved daughter Maureen and grandchildren Daniel and Jonathan and all of her siblings Anna Marie, Robert, Agnes, Maureen, Joseph, Daniel and Joan.

She is survived by her children Kathleen (Jerry) Stapleton, James (Kathy) Tobin, Colleen (Robert) Rose, Daniel (Allison) Tobin, Thomas (Carolyn) Tobin, Robert (Tina) Tobin and Tom Gagan.  She leaves behind 13 loving grandchildren Andrew, Luke, Jack, Matt, Kristin, James, Lindsay, Robert, Rebecca, Alec, Tommy, Sean and Travis and 5 great grandchildren Bailey, Liam, Fiona, Esme and Aurora.

Viewing will be on Friday, April 5th from 4 to 8PM at Horn & Thomas, Inc Funeral Home, 83 E. Main St. Pawling, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 6h at St. John’s the Evangelist RC Church, 39 E. Main St. Pawling, NY 12564. She will be laid to rest beside her loving husband following mass at St. John’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Hudson Valley Hospice Dutchess County Office are appreciated in honor of the tender care and comfort they provided to Eileen over the last year of her life.
