Obituary, Richard J. Urban

Richard J. Urban, 75, of Montrose, NY, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at Rosary Hill Home in Hawthorne, New York. Mr. Urban started his career in the computer field and after several moves eventually became the director for the Chief Operating Officer of Blue Cross Blue Shield in New York City.

Born on November 5, 1947 in Queens, NY, he was the son of the late Anthony and Agnes (Brink) Urban. Mr. Urban received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and later a Master’s Degree in Operation Research from St. John’s University. On December 26, 1970, in Queens, NY, he married Lisa Cresci who survives at home.

In addition to his loving wife, Mr. Urban is survived by a daughter, Kim Urban, and her fiancée Paul Schemmer of Montrose, NY. He is also survived by a brother, Andrew Urban of Brant Lake, and two grandchildren, Hunter and Hayden Boritzer. These boys held a special place in his heart. He loved playing with them and teaching them how to do anything from woodworking to simple home repairs. He spent hours going over homework or preparing for tests with them. Besides his parents, Mr. Urban was predeceased by a brother, Peter Urban.

Richard was an avid sports enthusiast. He was a lifelong Notre Dame Football fan and a huge sports fan in general. He started his coaching career while still in college. At that time he coached swimming, baseball, and basketball for the CYO. Most recently, Richard coached boys’ tennis in Irvington from 2003 to 2019. Shortly after his daughter started to play volleyball, he began officiating girls’ volleyball and basketball and continued through 2018.

One of the things Richard was most happy doing was working for the Town of Cortlandt Nutrition Program. For the past fifteen years, he delivered food to the homebound and aged; it was a source of great satisfaction and seemed to give his life additional meaning.
