Pawling Library’s Battle of the Books Team Heads to Regionals
The Pawling Library’s middle school Battle of the Books team will be competing in the Mid-Hudson Regional Battle on Saturday, September 10th at the LaGrange Library in LaGrangeville, beginning at 2 pm.
The Pawling Pirates members include Maia Dumas, Mariel Germosen, Bella Germosen, Cillian Gribbon, Aarav Jassal, and Rylee McDonough. The team has read six books over the spring and summer and have met with other area libraries for practice battles. At the Regional Battle, they will face four other libraries’ teams in a round-robin-style competition. The team with the most wins will move on to the Final Battle on September 17th, to be held at the Mid-Hudson Library System Auditorium at 10 am.
Battle of the Books is a national Summer Reading Program for middle- and high-school students. Participants in the Mid-Hudson Library System program are asked to read the selected titles each summer, and then participate in trivia battles based on the books. The goal of the program is to promote a love of reading in children and teens, to expose them to titles and authors that they might not encounter in school, and to inspire teamwork and good sportsmanship in an atmosphere of friendly competition.
This year’s titles are: The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin; Cub by Cynthia L. Copeland; Ivy Aberdeen’s Letter to the World by Ashley Herring Blake; Rain Reign by Ann M. Martin; The Season of Styx Malone by Kekia Magoon; and The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann. The books are available at the Pawling Library.
