Obituary, Katharine Coon Dunlop

Katharine Coon Dunlop, 87, a lifelong resident of Amenia, NY, passed away on Monday, August 22, 2022 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. Mrs. Dunlop taught kindergarten at Berlin Central School and then 2nd and 3rd Grade at Webutuck Central School and Millbrook Elementary School for 35 years. She also owned and operated Katherine C. Dunlop Realty in Amenia for 50 years.

Born on December 11, 1934, in New York, NY, she was the daughter of the late Homer A. and Elizabeth (Putnam) Coon. Katharine graduated from Amenia High School in 1952, as salutatorian of her class, and Colby College, Waterville, Me., class of 1956, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi, social sorority and the outing club and served as president of the French club. Mrs. Dunlop was a former Amenia Town Board Member. She was also a member of the Amenia Republican Committee and served as a delegate to the 1984 National Republican Convention in Dallas, Texas. A highlight of her life was to attend Ronald Regan’s Inauguration in 1985, sit in the Time-Life booth for the parade and attend an Inaugural Ball. Katharine was an avid bird watcher and land conservancy supporter. Her grandson’s Mackenzie and Colby were the lite of her life. She often attended their baseball games and would loudly shout “Slam it Mackenzie or Slam it Colby” when they came up to bat! She had passion for life! Mrs. Dunlop was also a longtime member of the Smithfield Presbyterian Church in Amenia and served on their Session committee.

Mrs. Dunlop is survived by a son, Robert P. Dunlop and his wife, Vickie, of Amenia, NY. She is also survived by a brother, Dirck Coon of Amenia; two grandchildren, Mackenzie and Colby Dunlop and one great-grandson, Corey Dunlop. Many cousins, nephews and nieces. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Dunlop was predeceased by a sister, Annatje Gilbert, a brother, Garrison Coon and a great-granddaughter, Ellie Rene Dunlop.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, August 26, 2022 at the Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains, NY. Funeral services will take place 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 27, 2022 at Smithfield Presbyterian Church, 656 Smithfield Valley Rd, Amenia, NY with Rev. Douglas Grandgeorge officiating.
