DUTCHESS COUNTY COMPTROLLER ROBIN LOIS RELEASES AUDIT OF PETTY CASH ACROSS MULTIPLE COUNTY DEPARTMENTS

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – The Dutchess County Comptroller’s Office has released their audit report of petty cash accounts throughout County Departments, verifying cash counts on hand and the processes by which the funds are used and safeguarded.

The petty cash count totaled $20,883 across 19 departments with 113 uses in the amount of $7,234. Due to the decreased need for petty cash with the advent of Purchasing Cards, it’s been recommended by the Comptroller’s Office that Departments decrease their authorized funds to better reflect the current lowered usage with a goal of eliminating petty cash entirely where feasible.

“When cash is involved it’s important that there be strong internal controls in place to safeguard the funds,” Comptroller Lois stated. “We found no material discrepancies, although it was observed that there are inconsistent policies and procedures throughout the County Departments.”

It was recommended that a new County-wide policy be adopted and followed by all Departments.
