Carmel, New York – On May 25, 2022, the New York State Police from the Brewster barracks arrested Alexander Backofen, age 26, of Bedford, NY, for Rape in the 1^st degree, two counts of Criminal Sex Act in the 1^st degree, all class B felonies, and Assault in the 2^nd degree, a class D felony.

Investigation determined Backofen traveled to Carmel and forcibly raped and assaulted a victim that was known to him.

Backofen was arraigned before the Honorable Judge Miller of the town of Carmel Court and remanded to the Putnam County Jail in lieu of $75,000 cash bail or $150,000 bond.  He is next scheduled to appear before the court on June 13, 2022, at 5:30 p.m.
