Bedford man arrested for rape

Carmel, New York – On May 25, 2022, the New York State Police from the Brewster barracks arrested Alexander Backofen, age 26, of Bedford, NY, for Rape in the 1st degree, two counts of Criminal Sex Act in the 1st degree, all class B felonies, and Assault in the 2nd degree, a class D felony.

Investigation determined Backofen traveled to Carmel and forcibly raped and assaulted a victim that was known to him.

Backofen was arraigned before the Honorable Judge Miller of the town of Carmel Court and remanded to the Putnam County Jail in lieu of $75,000 cash bail or $150,000 bond.  He is next scheduled to appear before the court on June 13, 2022, at 5:30 p.m.
