Couple Arrested for Gun and Drug Charges

On 04/27/15 Troopers from SP Monroe stopped a 2012 Nissan Maxima that had run a stop sign on ST-17M in the Village of Monroe. The driver of the vehicle, Ariel Varsanyi 34 years old from Newburgh, NY, fled from the scene on foot. While Varsanyi was fleeing, he threw a loaded Smith and Wesson .380 caliber handgun into a grassy area behind a pharmacy and then threw a quantity of Cocaine and Heroin behind a nearby auto body shop. The evedence was recoveded by two Members of the State Police K-9 Unit. One K-9 specializes in detecting gun powder was used to locate the gun while the other specializes in narcotics detection.

A passenger in the vehicle, Tessa Smith, 22 years old of Monroe, NY was arrested at the scene for possession of Cocaine. She was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substanc 5th (a Class D Felony), arraigned in the Village of Monroe court before Village Justice Strauss, and remanded to Orange County Jail in Lieu of $15,000.00 bail.

Varsanyi was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd (a Class C Felony) and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 4th (a Class C Felony) in the Village of Monroe. He was also arraigned before Village Justice Strauss and is being held in the Orange County Jail in lieu of $90,000.00 bail.

Subsequent to the arrest of Varsanyi by State Police Members from SP Monroe, the New York State Community Narcotics Enforcement Team – CNET, along with United States Probation Office, and the Town of Newburgh Police conducted a search of Varsanyi’s residence on Maggie Road in the Town of Newburgh, Orange County. Varsanyi is currently on United States Federal Probation for a previous narcotics possession charge.

Sig Sauer .45 caliber semi automatic handgun
.22 caliber Derringer revolver type pistol
Numerous high capacity ammunition magazines
Approximately 3 Ounces of Heroin
Approximately 2.5 Ounces of Cocaine
Approximately 16 grams of Hydrocodone
Approximately 17 grams of Marijuana
Various agents used for cutting narcotics
Various narcotics packaging and processing materials
