Fatal pedestrian train crash in Rhinebeck

Rhinebeck, New York – On May 1, 2022, the New York State Police and the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office responded to a pedestrian and an Amtrak train crash just north of the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge.

At approximately 4:45 p.m. Troopers and Dutchess County Deputies responded to Slate Dock Road for a report of a pedestrian struck by a train.  Investigation determined, Carrie A. Gemmell, age 36, of Kingston, NY, was attempting to collect her dog as an Amtrak passenger train was southbound at the location.  Gemmell and the dog were fatally struck by the train and pronounced at the scene.

The Dutchess County Emergency Response Team responded and assisted on scene.  The Mobile Crisis team also responded and rendered aid to the impacted family.

This investigation remains ongoing.
