Commission on Human Rights Members

Poughkeepsie… The Dutchess County Commission on Human Rights is seeking candidates for membership on the Commission to fill vacancies as terms expire.  Individuals who are dedicated to the cause of human rights and seek to ensure Dutchess County is an inclusive and respectful community for all are encouraged to apply.   The Commission seeks candidates who represent the full diversity of the County, including geographical diversity. Applications are available online at dutchessny.gov/humanrights.  Application deadline is March 31, 2022.

Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro said, “We are grateful to those who serve on our Commission on Human Rights for all they do to foster mutual respect and understanding.  The Commission is an important resource for those who feel they have been subject to bias or discrimination, so the work of the Commission members is vital.”

The Commission on Human Rights is composed of 14 volunteer members and an Executive Director/ Chair employed by the County.  The Commission, which meets monthly, works to defend human rights, bridge differences, and embrace diversity in Dutchess County. Between meetings, members participate in various work groups to help carry out this mission.  Volunteer applicants must be at least 18 years old and must be prepared to spend approximately five to 10 hours a month on the Commission’s work.  There will be four membership vacancies effective September 2022 as current members’ terms expire. New Commission members terms will begin on October 1st, 2022 and are three year appointments.

All candidates will participate in an interview process with the Commission’s Nominating Work Group.  The Work Group then reports to the full Commission, and the Commission makes its recommendations to the County Executive and Chair of the County Legislature. All appointments are subject to confirmation by the Dutchess County Legislature.
