Fatal Fire in Millerton

On November 6, 2021 at 07:58am the Millerton Fire Company was dispatched to 5902 South Elm Avenue for a report of a possible house fire with people trapped.
Chief Jason Watson arrived within 4 minutes and found the house fully engulfed in flames with a report of 2 people still trapped inside the structure. Chief Watson immediately transmitted a 2nd alarm bringing additional equipment and manpower from Amenia, Wassaic, Copake, Ancram, Hillsdale, Lakeville, Sharon, Falls Village Fire Companies, and Town of North East Medic 1. Pine Plains Hose Company was brought in to stand by in Millerton’s Fire Station.
The first engine arrived on scene and immediately began suppressing the fire, utilizing compressed air foam. One Female was transported to the hospital by North East Medic 1 for smoke inhalation, a Firefighter was also transported for an injury. Tragically two people lost their lives inside the home. The fire was placed under control at 11:44am.
The cause and origin of the fire is being investigated by the Dutchess County Fire Investigation team, New York State Police, and the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.
All units were back in service at 7:30pm. Millerton is not releasing the names of the fire victims at this time.
The Millerton Fire Company and the North East fire District would like to thank Millerton Fire’s Support Group, County Executive Marc Molinaro, Village Mayor Jenn Najdek, Deputy Mayor Alicia Sarori, Village Clerk Kelly Kilmer, North East Town Supervisor Chris Kennan, Talk of the Towne Deli, Four Brothers Pizza, Herrington’s Lumber, Northwest Lawn and Landscape, Four Seasons Pools, along with the community who reached out to give a hand. A big thank you also to the Dutchess 911 Dispatcher’s and coordinators CC-2, CC-3, CC-14, CC-51, and CC-59. And last but not least the 50 plus Volunteer Firefighters who answered the alarm in helping to suppress this tragic fire.
