Pleasant Valley Fatal Crash Under Investigation

The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office reports the investigation into a one-car fatal crash which occurred on Route 44 in the Town of Pleasant Valley at approximately 3:15 pm on 9/25/21.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that a 2017 Toyota minivan operated by Michael A. Santiago (age 45 of Poughkeepsie) was traveling eastbound on Route 44 near Rossway Rd when it exited the roadway off the southern shoulder and struck two signs, a mailbox, and finally a utility pole. Mr. Santiago, who was the sole occupant, was transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Pleasant Valley Fire Department.

At this time the primary factors in the crash appear to be erratic operation and unsafe speed. The investigation is continuing by the Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau and Crash Investigation Unit, and more information may be released as it becomes available.
