SENIOR FARMERS MARKET COUPONS EXPECTED BY AUGUST

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets will soon deliver the 2021 supply of coupon booklets for the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) to the Office for the Aging. We expect the booklets will be ready for distribution to qualifying seniors by early August. The program promotes improved nutrition through increased consumption of locally grown fresh produce, with the added benefit of expanding sales at participating markets and farm stands.

In past years, distribution of coupon booklets was limited to one per household; this year, each qualifying older adult in a household is eligible to receive a booklet.

Age and income are the qualifying factors for SFMNP booklets. To qualify, seniors must be age 60 or above, and have a gross monthly income at or below 185% of federal poverty guidelines; OR are currently eligible to receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), public assistance including SNAP, or Section 8 housing subsidy.

Each booklet contains five $4 coupons that can be used at participating farmers markets throughout New York State.

Eligible recipients must personally sign the Statement of Eligibility Form to receive SFMNP checks. Checks cannot be mailed to eligible older adults. Proxies may not pick-up and sign for checks. A valid Power of Attorney (POA) may sign for checks and pick up books for an eligible older adult. POA must bring proof of their being someone’s POA. While the client must sign in person for the booklet, a caregiver or family member, or another person, may shop at the farmers market for them using their coupons.

Coupons can be used until November 30th, or whenever a participating market closes for the season, whichever comes earlier.

Below is the most recent available list of participating markets in Dutchess County – but keep in mind that markets often join the program later in a calendar year. An asterisk next to the market’s name indicates that it also accepts Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
