The Pawling Library Kicks Off Its Centennial with The Big Noise Brass Band on the Village Green

By Susan Stone

More than one hundred fifty community members came out to celebrate the Pawling Library Centennial Year kickoff on Saturday, May 22nd, with New Orleans style Jazz, hot dogs and lemonade and lots of good will all around!  With folks lounging in lawn chairs, perching on chairs donated by Pawling Recreation, and on benches surrounding the gazebo where the Big Noise Brass Band performed, those in attendance had a rollicking good time.

The event was introduced by Amy Emke and Susan Stone, who are co-chairs of the centennial committee.  Other committee members who could be found working in the food and information tents were:  Deb Muroski, Verna Carey, Stephanie Mclaughlin, Susan Schwartzman, and Maryellen Ros.   Friends and family of committee members also pitched in to ensure the event’s success. They included: Aaron and Levi Emke, Lisa Kohomban, Nancy Rhindress, Laura McLaughlin, and Marli Higa.

Also in attendance were Mark Molinaro, County Executive; Ric Swierat, President of the Mid-Hudson Library System Board of Trustees; and Ed Hauser, Dutchess County Legislator; as well as several members of the town and village boards.

This event also served to formally introduce the community to the new children’s wing, the Kids Corner, the centennial project for which the library trustees have embarked on a year-long fundraising campaign.

Acknowledgement was made to the many community businesses who have already contributed to this fundraising effort.  They included Platinum Sponsor Chris Shaw at Tangible Agency; Gold Sponsor Brian Smith at Fairway Accounting; and Hometown Event Sponsors Thomas Chen at Crystal Lakehill, Steve Zehring at Ingersoll Auto of Pawling, The Pawling Community Foundation, Charlie Daniels at Rose & Kiernan, Jessica Dickenson, and Wendel Weber and his crew at Pawling Recreation.  Also listed among Hometown Event sponsors were George Apap, John Ammaturo at Dutchess Auto Body, Pete Muroski at Native Landscapes and Garden Center, and Reed Asher at Phoenix Pottery.  Additional supporters included Edison Cleaners; Parrino’s Florist & Garden Center; Patterson Auto Body; Family Orthodontics; Wicked Finch Farm; Wings Over Water; Emery & Webb; The Smith/Johnson Scout Cabin; Mizzentop Day School;  NICÓLJOË NEW YORK; and Berlandi, Nussbaum & Reitzas.

Sunflour Bakery created charming Lola (the Kids Corner mascot) cookies, which were available for sale at the event, and can also be purchased at the bakery at 5 Broad Street.  A portion of the proceeds will be donated to this fundraising effort. Finally, McKinney and Doyle will be selling specialty gin cocktails throughout the year in recognition of this signature 1920’s spirit. A portion of each sale will also be donated.

Questions about contributing to the centennial project may be directed to Stephanie Mclaughlin at 914.474.3320.
