PRESS RELEASE

On Sunday, April 19, 2015, State Police and State Police Aviation were called to a report of a missing kayaker on the Hudson River.

At approximately 7:30 p.m., Angelika Graswald and Vincent Viafore, both of Poughkeepsie, NY, were kayaking on the Hudson in the area of Cornwall, NY.

Rough water and strong wind and currents caused Viafore’s kayak to capsize. Viafore was not wearing a flotation device and was unable to return to his kayak.

Graswald contacted 911 to report the incident, but during her efforts to assist Viafore, she fell out of her own kayak. She was subsequently located in the water by a boater and was rescued.

Both kayaks were located and recovered, but State Police Aviation, local marine patrols and fire departments were unsuccessful in locating Viafore on Sunday night.

Search operations were suspended until Monday morning and efforts to locate Viafore are ongoing.

Graswald was treated and released from a local hospital for hypothermia.
