Pawling Library Prepping to Re-open

Pawling Library Prepping to Re-open

At the Pawling Library, a large-scale project has recently begun called Genrefication. Through this process, library staff will alter how they organize and shelve the fiction picture book collection in the children’s area. Instead of organizing alphabetically by author’s last name, these books will soon be shelved by genre/topic. According to Neena Mcbaer, Children’s Program Coordinator,  “this change should improve the brows-ability and accessibility of this section for patrons, especially pre-readers and developing readers, and cut down on reader’s advisory requests on the front desk.”  With the assistance of Lisa Geocos, Neena has begun the process of sorting books into their new categories. The aim is to complete as much of the process as possible before reopening to the public, now scheduled to enter phase four on July 14th.
Good progress is definitely being made on this project. Neena and Lisa have finished organizing all the books and now they are re-labeling them to be replaced on the shelves. Neena added, “given how busy staff is with the many contact-less checkout calls and emails, I doubt that we will be fully done with this project by July 14th when the library re-opens. However, at least 50% of the books should be reprocessed and back on the shelves. The piles of books currently spread throughout the library should be contained to just the picture book section by then. Hopefully, everything will be fully back on the shelves by the end of the month. It all depends on how busy we are when we reopen.”
