A special health lecture on COVID-19 presented

for the Pawing Library

On the evening of May 5, the Pawling Library provided a very special online program: Coronavirus (Covid-19) Free Health Lecture presented by our guest speaker, Ayurvedic and Naturopathic Physician Dr. Somesh N. Kaushik. “The topic of the day and everyday is Covid-19,” Dr. Kaushik said at the start of his lecture. “We’ll talk about the corona virus and what can be done about prevention.  At this point there is no treatment available. Covid-19 is more contagious than other coronaviruses due to it being new to our immune system.” The doctor reviewed the risk factors involved such as advanced age, asthma, diabetes and other medical conditions. He also noted that the media unfortunately further elevates our stress levels causing further suppression of our immune systems. “As a vaccine has not yet been developed, precautions are the only thing working at this time. The topic we are going to cover,” Dr. Kaushik said, “is how to maintain and boost our immune system.” Dr. Kaushik informed the audience that Ayurvedic medicine is called supportive care, through diet, lifestyle and medicine. The doctor told us in detail what foods should be consumed: soups, fresh organic produce, preferably locally grown, foods high in vitamin C such as broccoli, mangoes, and all the citrus fruits, providing nutrients that are easily absorbable. He reviewed lists of beneficial herbs, spices, supplements and even ozone therapies that have provided patients with good results. In closing Dr. Kaushik told us, “We know that those who were able to beat the disease and survive had strong immune systems.” His strong message is that boosting and maintaining our immune systems, along with maintaining social distancing, should be our prime directive during this pandemic as we await a vaccine and a cure.

We thank Dr. Kaushik for volunteering his time.  A recording of Dr. Kaushik’s lecture is available on the Pawling Library website. He will be returning to our library to address other very important topics. Please check our website for up to date details. Dr. Kaushik’s next presentation is The Immune System: Balancing the Microbiome on June 2.

One of our patrons wrote to us, “Thank you for keeping our library alive in these uncertain times.” Thank you to all for your thoughtful wishes. You mean the world to us.
