Millbrook’s Janine Rossi Earns Fulbright Award

GENESEO, NY (05/30/2019) Millbrook, NY, native and Our Lady of Lourdes graduate Janine “Jay” Rossi has won a 2019-20 U.S. Student Fulbright award to teach English in Uruguay. Rossi graduated from SUNY Geneseo in 2018 with a major in Spanish and a minor in Latin American studies. She is presently enrolled in a master’s program at SUNY New Paltz in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

After her return to the U.S., Rossi will seek New York State certification in Spanish adolescent education, allowing her to teach both English as a New Language (ENL) and Spanish.

Rossi is an English as a Second Language (ESL) tutor in the Haggerty English Language Program at SUNY New Paltz and a substitute teacher’s assistant in the Arlington Central School District. At Geneseo, she served as a Spanish tutor and treasurer of the Spanish and Theatre Clubs.

SUNY Geneseo was recently named a Top Producer of U.S. Student Fulbright awards, the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announced in its annual article in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

The Fulbright Program is the highly competitive flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and citizens of other countries. According to the U.S. State Department, Fulbrighters are considered cultural ambassadors who “interact with their hosts on a one-to-one basis in an atmosphere of openness, academic integrity, and intellectual freedom, thereby promoting mutual understanding.”
