The Brave Project

Because Your Daughter’s Life Should Never Be Defined With A Hashtag

April 29, 2019. Pawling, New York. The Brave Project, a self-awareness, educational and hands-on safety program for high school age girls will be coming to Pawling Rec on Saturday, May 11th. It will be held from 9:00am – 3:00pm.

Topics covered will include: healthy relationships, personal boundaries, bullying, cyberbullying, digital safety, consent, non-physical and physical ways to stay safe, and alcohol and drug-facilitated sexual assault.

This is the 2nd time The Brave Project will be offered at Pawling Rec. A slightly modified version of this program was first offered there this past March for 5th and 6th graders and was very well-received by both participants and parents. Says one participant’s mom, “Hands down, this is one of the best things I’ve sent Finnley to! She loved it and I love what she’s learning in a safe and nurturing environment with other young girls. We can’t wait for Part 2!”

This program was created by local Mom and Social Worker, Laura Bagnarol and certified self-defense instructor, Leah Feldman.

Says Bagnarol, “This program is a response to what we see happening with girls in both our personal and professional lives. As girls reach middle school, their self-esteem plummets. They are being bombarded with hyper-sexual images, which in turn affects their own sense of self. As teens, girls are at an increased risk of being sexually assaulted. Leah and I have been in the field of victim services long before the #MeToo movement and are unfortunately all too familiar with the endemic problem of sexual violence.”

Bagnarol states, “We just want to do something to combat the problems we know girls are facing. At the same time, we also want to put an end to the mean girl culture, to remind girls to look out for one another, and to not get caught up in drama. If we teach girls to lift each other up now while they are still young, they will grow into women who do the same.”

Program cost of $125 will include breakfast, lunch, a snack, and a Brave Project journal.
