Bridge to be Replaced on Bulls Head Road in Stanford
Poughkeepsie…The Dutchess County Department of Public Works (DPW) has announced work on bridge S-37 on Bulls Head Road (CR-19) in the Town of Stanford is expected to begin this month. The bridge, located near the intersection of Depot Lane, will be replaced due to structural deficiencies that have led to weight restrictions over time. Project work will involve realigning Bulls Head Road and constructing a new bridge next to the existing structure, allowing the road to remain open during construction with only occasional lane restrictions for certain operations such as moving equipment and materials.
The new bridge will be wider to accommodate the addition of shoulders and will have new guide rail installed along the road and the bridge. Bulls Head Road will also be widened and straightened to improve the safety of the approach to the bridge as well as the visibility and safety of the Depot Lane intersection.
There will be periods of one-way alternating traffic patterns in the late-summer or fall as traffic is shifted onto the new road and bridge. Signs will be posted in advance. Construction crews will work swiftly to complete this process to minimize traffic delays. Work is expected to be complete, with the new bridge and both lanes of traffic open, by November 2019. The removal of the current bridge and final site restoration will be completed in Spring 2020.
Total project cost is estimated at $2.4 million and is partially funded by a $1.68 million grant from New York State’s BridgeNY program. Bulls Head Road averages approximately 1,137 vehicles per day.
Motorists are advised to plan for additional time and to exercise extra caution near the construction site, obey the posted speed limits, traffic advisory signs, and the directions from flaggers in the work zone to ensure the safety of workers and other motorists.
