Cold Case Tuesday: State Police continue to investigate the identity of human remains found in the Town of Greenville in 1991.

State Police continue to investigate the identity of human remains found in a swampy area off Woods Road and Eaton Lane (now Tap Stone Lane) in the Town of Greenville in 1991.

On September 14, 1991, at approximately 9:30 AM, The New York State Police, SP Middletown responded to a report of skeletal remains found approximately ¼ mile East of Woods Road and 200 yards South of Tap Stone Lane formally known as Eaton Lane in the Town of Greenville.  The remains are believed to be that of a white male in his mid- 60’s standing approximately 5 feet, 6 inches tall.  Forensic evidence leads State Police to believe the man died sometime between 1975 and 1986.  The male was found well dressed in a pair of blue nylon trousers, blue knit socks, a yellow long-sleeved fitted shirt, a knit sweater, and size 10 wingtip shoes.  Found with the man were a pair of horn-rimmed bifocal “Leonardo Style” glasses bought from D.J. Riehle Opticians.  The store name was legible on the inside of the plastic right arm of the glasses.  Store records dating back to the 1970’s are not available, however, this information suggests that the man was a resident of the Hudson Valley.  Found along with the male was a Timex watch, a black plastic wallet, a green canvas bag, a black plastic memo book, keys and approximately 75 cents in change with the latest coin dated 1972.  Information in the wallet and memo book was illegible due to deteriorating inside the swampy water.

The swampy area where the remains were found used to be covered with 3 to 4 feet of water until June of 1991 when a nearby landowner obtained a permit from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation to drain the area due to beaver damage.  As a result of draining, the remains were subsequently found three months later.  Below is a sketch of what the male was believed to have looked like and the items recovered.  If you have any information regarding the possible identity of this man, please contact Investigator Stephen Malone, SP Middletown BCI at 845-344-5353.
