MEDICARE SEMINARS AROUND THE COUNTY

Residents of southeastern Dutchess County will have a chance to learn more about Medicare at one of two informational sessions taking place this month at the Pawling Free Library (11 Front St., (845) 855-3444 or www.pawlingfreelibrary.org). The Office for the Aging is hosting “Medicare 101” informational sessions at the library at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 15th, and at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 24th. Space at both information sessions is extremely limited, so reserve a spot by contacting the library or the Office for the Aging.

We are also hosting sessions in October and November on navigating the Medicare website (www.medicare.gov) at the following locations, dates and times:

Tuesday, October 16th, 6:30 p.m. – Boardman Road Library (141 Boardman Rd, Poughkeepsie)

            Wednesday, October 23rd, 9:30 a.m. – Adriance Memorial Library (93 Market St.)

            Thursday, November 8th, 6:30 p.m. – Adriance Library

            Wednesday, November 28th, 9:30 a.m. – Adriance Library

Space at these sessions is available by reservation by contacting the Office for the Aging.

ONLY A FEW SENIOR PROM TIX LEFT?

Seats and time are both in short supply for next month’s 23rd annual Office for the Aging Senior Prom, being held Monday, October 15th from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at Villa Borghese in Wappinger.

Admission is now $30 per person. The lower-price admission offer expired last week – but as of press time, there were still a handful of seats left.

This year’s theme is “The Big Game.” If you’d like, you can dress for the prom as though you were headed out to watch or participate in your favorite sporting event, whether it’s a football or baseball game, a golf tournament…even a cricket match!

Co-sponsoring the prom once again is The Pines at Poughkeepsie. Other sponsors for the Senior Prom include Wingate Healthcare, EverCare At Home, Northwestern Mutual, and the Dutchess County Department of Community and Family Services.

SAVE THE DATE

November is National Family Caregivers Month, and the 14th annual Dutchess County Caregivers Conference is taking place this year on Friday, November 16th at the Grandview, 176 Rinaldi Boulevard in Poughkeepsie. VOLUNTEER DRIVERS NEEDED IN EAST FISHKILL, MILLERTON, PINE PLAINS

The Office for the Aging’s Home Delivered Meals program is looking for volunteers for delivery of midday meals to homebound seniors in the East Fishkill area, and in northeastern Dutchess County, including the Towns of North East and Pine Plains along with the Village of Millerton.

Volunteers are also needed to deliver frozen meals to homebound clients in the Pine Plains area, on the third Tuesday of every month.

You’ll be able to help some of the seniors who need assistance the most – and this time of year, you get the bonus of enjoying some of the finest fall foliage anywhere as you make deliveries.

A background check is required for these volunteer positions, which involve using one’s own vehicle. Also required are a valid driver’s license and insurance coverage. Mileage reimbursement is available.

For more information, contact the Office for the Aging at (845) 486-2555, or email Nutrition Services Coordinator Nimesh Bhargava at nbhargava@dutchessny.gov.

YEAR OF THE VETERAN PARADE (Sun 9/30)

You are invited to Dutchess County’s “Year of the Veteran” Parade on Sunday, Sept. 30th, starting at 1 p.m. in the City of Poughkeepsie. The parade will step off at Market Street and progress down Main Street, ending at Waryas Park.

Veterans can call the Division of Veterans’ Services at 845-486-2060 to learn about taking part – vehicles will be available for veterans unable to march – and residents of all ages are invited to line the parade route and show their support for the brave men and women who have valiantly served our nation to preserve our freedoms.

Veterans from every municipality in Dutchess County will march, and groups including the Hudson Valley Alumni Guard, Spackenkill High School Marching Band and the Purple Heart Foundation will also take part, making this an inspirational community event.

The parade takes place on Gold Star Family’s Day, and at the parade’s conclusion, those in attendance are invited to a recognition of Gold Star Families at Waryas Park. A touch-a-truck event with military vehicles, live music and games, as well as other entertainment, will follow at Waryas Park.

HOUSEHOLD HAZMAT/ELECTRONICS RECYCLING (Sat 10/27)

The Dutchess County Division of Solid Waste Management will hold a Household Hazardous Waste Disposal & Electronics Recycling Event on Saturday, October 27th from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Dutchess County Department of Public Works (626 Dutchess Turnpike, Poughkeepsie). Residents can access the event by taking Route 44 East to Burnett Boulevard. The collection is open to Dutchess County residents only.

This popular event is first-come, first-served, and residents should expect to experience wait times. Hazardous waste in containers larger than 10 gallons will not be accepted.

Pre-registration is required for this event and there is a $10 registration fee. Residents can register online or by calling (845) 463-6020. The fee can be paid online using a credit card, or paid by check. Checks should be made payable to “Dutchess County Commissioner of Finance” and mailed to or dropped off to the Dutchess County Division of Solid Waste Management at 96 Sand Dock Road, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.

Acceptable items include television sets, computer monitors, telephones, pesticides, pool chemicals, and more. A complete list of acceptable items to bring to this disposal day is included in the flyer available by clicking this link.

The Dutchess County Division of Solid Waste Management collection events are partially funded by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
