SENATE CANDIDATES PUT A SPOTLIGHT ON LACK OF PROGRESS IN RECENT LEGISLATIVE SESSION

(Albany, NYFour candidates for the New York State Senate stood together in the State Capitol to highlight the lack of progress under the Senate Republican Majority and their respective opponents. The four candidates, all women from the greater Hudson Valley and surrounding communities, have been inspired to run for State Senate to give their constituents the effective representation they deserve. The candidates include Jen Metzger (SD42), Karen Smythe (SD41), Joyce St. George (SD51), and Pat Strong (SD46).

With the constant attacks coming from Washington on people’s rights and well-being, the four candidates for State Senate spoke of the need to protect New Yorkers. They criticized Republican Senators for following in Trump’s footsteps, rather than representing their constituents.

Senate Candidate Jen Metzger (SD42) said, “There’s a lot of focus on national politics. But most of the issues that affect our communities day to day, and many of the opportunities for real progress, can be championed by our state government. Unfortunately, the New York State Senate is where good legislation goes to die, and this year has been no exception. In the Legislative Session that just ended, the Senate Majority showed us that they have lost their connection to the people they represent. They are more interested in serving corporate donors than improving the lives of our working families, seniors, and young people. We need a State Legislature that works for all of us, and that will only happen when we get real change in the State Senate. I have the experience and determination to get it done.”

Senate Candidate Karen Smythe (SD41) said, “New Yorkers are tired of the corruption, dysfunction, and lack of progress that has plagued the State Senate for too long. For our state to move forward and the Hudson Valley to receive the representation we deserve, we clearly need a change. I am running because my constituents deserve a Senator who will fight for them and to help our region grow and prosper. The voters have been denied the progress and leadership they deserve, and for that to change we need new leadership in Albany.”

Senate Candidate Joyce St. George (SD51 )said, “We deserve strong and independent leadership, not a rubber stamp for party bosses or special interests. For too long our communities have been ignored by state government and allowed to decay due to lack of investment and sky-high taxes. For us to receive better leadership, we need new people to step up, get involved, and run for office. I am proud to run for State Senate, because my communities and constituents have been failed for too long, and we are ready for real change and progress.”

Senate Candidate Pat Strong (SD46) said, “Upstate New York has been overtaxed, underserved, and ignored for too long. We need real leadership and independent representation for our communities to thrive once again. I am running for State Senate because I want to help my constituents and ensure they finally receive the leadership in Albany that they deserve. Only by stepping up, getting involved, and moving forward will we be able to end the stagnation that has plagued our communities under the Senate Republicans.”

Additionally, the four Democratic Senate candidates outlined the challenges facing their respective districts and the overall region, and pointed out that Republican Senators have consistently blocked efforts to achieve progress on critical issues that New Yorkers overwhelmingly support. To address these problems, candidates Metzger, Smythe, St. George, and Strong pledged to serve as strong, independent representatives for their communities and to address their constituents’ priorities in the State Senate.
