Smythe Stands With Teachers, Chides Serino For Inaction

(Hyde Park, NY) Karen Smythe rallied with parents, students, educators, and public education stakeholders to demand action on legislation to eliminate the use of state tests for teacher evaluations. Current Senator Sue Serino and the Senate Republican Majority have refused to bring this bill to the Senate floor for a vote yet, and there are under two weeks left to the Legislative Session.

“Linking teacher evaluations to high-stakes, standardized student tests was a mistake in 2015 when Sue Serino voted in favor of it, and it is still wrong,” Karen Smythe said. “Now, with the opportunity to finally undo this damage, Sue Serino and her party bosses are dragging their heels and refusing to act. Our students and educators deserve an end to this harmful policy, and we deserve a Senator who takes action and leads, and that clearly isn’t Sue Serino.”

The Senate bill, S.8301, would eliminate the use of standardized state exams in the factor of teacher and administrator evaluations. This legislation has been sponsored by 55 Senators from the 63-member Senate and has broad bi-partisan support.
