Faso Demands Action on Immigration Proposals
Washington D.C. – Congressman John Faso (R-Kinderhook) today signed a discharge petition to force House floor consideration of four separate proposals pertaining to immigration reform, strengthening border security and the DACA program. A discharge petition moves legislation out of the relevant committee and to the House floor once the petition gains 218 signatures.
The four proposals included in the discharge petition will be amendments offered by Representative Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), Representative Lucille Roybal Allard (D-CA), Representative Jeff Denham (R-CA), and Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI). If more than one of the proposed amendments gains the support of the majority of the House, the amendment that gains the most support becomes the legislation subject to a vote of final passage. That legislation is voted on by the House under expedited rules. The process is most commonly known as ‘Queen of the Hill.’ In February, Rep. Faso signed a letter to the Speaker urging the use of ‘Queen of the Hill’ for consideration of immigration proposals on the House floor.
“Our immigration system is badly broken and it is well past time for Congress to act on legislation to strengthen our border security, ensure Upstate farmers can hire seasonal guest workers, and allow DACA recipients to continue contributing to American society,” said Faso. “I hear all too often from farmers in Upstate New York that they are unable to hire enough workers due to an outdated and bureaucratic immigration system.
“This discharge petition is the most immediate method of bringing immigration legislation to the House floor. I am determined to reach a bipartisan and comprehensive solution,” Faso continued.
The discharge petition originates from H.Res.774, which has a bipartisan coalition of 248 cosponsors.
