County Nutrition Coordinator to Present at Diabetes Alert Day Event

Poughkeepsie … Tuesday, March 27th is Diabetes Alert Day, a day to raise awareness about the seriousness of diabetes and prediabetes, particularly when left undiagnosed or untreated.

Dutchess County Department of Behavioral & Community Health (DBCH) Public Health Nutrition Coordinator Ozie Williams will present at “Sounding the Alarm! Cooking Well for Prediabetes Prevention” on March 27th from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Poughkeepsie Open Kitchen, located at 8 N. Cherry Street in Poughkeepsie. Attendees at this free event will learn recipes that are fun, delicious, and most importantly, healthy. Residents can find more information or register by calling or texting (845) 337-0263 or dbelding@HudsonRiverHousing.org.

Diabetes and prediabetes can lead to severe complications including kidney disease, blindness and amputations. Residents can visit Diabetes.org to learn if they are at risk. This simple online tool asks a few straightforward questions, calculates risk factors, and provides preventative tips.

“More than 30 million Americans have diabetes, and 80 million are at risk for prediabetes,” said DBCH Commissioner A. K. Vaidian, MD, MPH. “This is a serious disease, with one in three adults at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes.”

Type 2 diabetes, however, can be prevented by healthy lifestyle changes, including controlling one’s weight, eating a well-balanced diet, and maintaining a physically active way of life.
