Obituary, Deacon Gilbert Johnson

 

Salt Point – Gilbert Johnson, was born in Orange, VA moved to Millbrook N.Y. at the age of 16 after being raised by his grandmother Alberta Johnson. As he then joined his mother Havana Johnson at the time who then married Rufus Strothers Sr. as Gilbert was the second oldest out of 13 children.

Gilbert worked on a farm first before going to Magnesium Plant in Wingdale, then to Schatz Federal Bearing Company in Poughkeepsie, from there he went to the Telephone company Mom Bell, Nynex which is now Verizon where he retired after close to 40 years of working. After that he started his own business doing Lawns and handy man work for others and agencies.

Gilbert was a member of the Central Baptist Church in Salt Point, since he came from Virginia. to Millbrook, where he was under the leadership of Pastor Wiggins, Pastor Douglas, Pastor Robert Dixon, Pastor Melvin Roundtree until his passing and Rev. Tony Hart, and Present Pastor / Teacher Rev. Dr. Richard P. Butler. He served on the Deacon Ministry as the head Deacon for many years, member of the Gospel Chorus, Men’s Choir, Mass Choir, Pastor Aid Ministry, and in 2010 he was appointment the Father of the church.

He is survived by his wife Gladys E. Johnson for 61 years, Daughters Dinesa L. Hansen-Johnson, Gilda E. Johnson-Flowers(James), Adopted Son- Kevin Moore Sr.(Maric), Adopted daughters- Christine Storr in Bahamas, Carleen Saunders, and others who Gilbert served as a father figure. Grand Children- Jamal Johnson(Emily), Shaniece Johnson(Jerrie), Miles Hansen Jr.(Danielle), Marquis Johnson, Tajah Johnson(Kwamel) Adopted Grand Children- Thiresa Green, Shakeera Glass, Kevin Moore Jr, Javone Moore- Great Grands- Deja Johnson, Jayden Johnson, Peyton Hansen, Mia Johnson, Jaysaun Johnson, Jayvin Johnson, Parker Hansen, Jenasys Johnson, Eliese Anderson– Adopted Great Grands- Jalasia Weldon.

He is also survived by his siblings: Evelyn Johnson(Robert), Gloria Morgan, Richard Strothers(Kathy), Philip Strothers, and 3 Forster Sisters Marie Latimore Mackey, Esther Latimore, Ruthie Latimore, and a host of Nieces and Nephews and Cousins.

He is predeceased by his parents, Brothers Herbert Johnson, Johnny Strothers, Lawrence Johnson, Rev. Rufus Strothers Jr, Clearance Strothers.

Mr. Johnson will repose 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at Central Baptist Church, 26 Church Street, Salt Point, NY, Services 11:00 a.m. at the church. Rev. Richard P. Butler officiating. Interment at Nine Partners Cemetery, Millbrook, NY.
