TAX PREP VOLUNTEERS WANTED FOR 2018

The Hudson Valley CA$H Coalition and AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is in need of volunteers from Dutchess County to serve as tax preparers for the 2018 tax season. Volunteers have an opportunity to increase their talents while helping low- and moderate-income neighbors receive free, reliable tax assistance and secure all the refunds and credits available to them. If you have prepared personal income taxes in the past, and are looking for a rewarding way to use these skills, consider volunteering with the coalition. Free training will be provided with IRS certification.

Tax-Aide also needs volunteers in other areas of expertise; other opportunities include IT support, client facilitator, program promotion and marketing. For more information, contact Linda Eddy at (845) 475-7500 or leddy@dutchesscap.org.

CONGRATS TO THE 2017 DUKE AND DUCHESS

This year’s 22nd annual Office for the Aging Senior Prom, presented October 16th in conjunction with the Pines at Poughkeepsie, was a great afternoon out for over 370 seniors who filled the dance floor at Villa Borghese in Wappingers Falls to the music of the Bob Martinson Band. Paul Ostachowsky of Hopewell Junction and Dale Valera of Fishkill were named this year’s Duke and Duchess of the Prom, respectively. They’ll ride in style to the 2018 prom, thanks to A Special Occasion Limousine of LaGrangeville.

We’re close to deciding on a theme for the 2018 prom, because so many devoted prom-goers take the better part of a year to make sure they’re dressed their best on the big day. When we make our decision we’ll be sure to let you know about it as soon as possible.

You can see dozens of pictures from the prom by following Dutchess County Government on Facebook, and more prom pictures will appear in the upcoming winter edition of the Spotlight on Seniors, due out in late November. A two-hour video recap of the prom will also be available in November on many area cable stations. If you’d like your own copy of the video, call Bob Mannino at True Video Productions at (845) 454-5927.

Many thanks to the Prom’s platinum sponsors: EverCare At Home, the Dutchess County Division of Community and Family Services, Wingate Healthcare, MidHudson Regional Hospital and MVP Healthcare.

HEY, SNOWBIRDS

If you’re headed south for the winter and putting a hold on your mail until you return, and you receive OFA publications in the mail, let us know when you’ll be gone and when you’ll be back, so that we can temporarily suspend your “Spotlight on Seniors” delivery for the winter. It makes for a considerable savings on printing and postage costs, which we can then use on more services for seniors.

Get in touch with Outreach Coordinator Brian Jones at bjones@dutchessny.gov or (845) 486-2555 to find out more.

We can resume sending you the “Spotlight on Seniors” in 2018, either with the spring edition that comes out in February, or the summer edition that comes out in May, depending on when you return.

Golden Living is prepared by the Dutchess County Office for the Aging, 27 High Street, Poughkeepsie, New York 12601, telephone (845) 486-2555, email:ofa@dutchessny.gov website: www.dutchessny.gov/aging

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME ENDS – TIME TO FALL BACK (Sun 11/5)

(Yep, it’s ‘saving’ with no second S.)
Daylight Saving Time this year began in March and will end at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 5 – that’s when clocks will move backward one hour. It’s generally recommended that you set your own clocks back the night before, at bedtime. If you own a smart phone or smart TV, the clock-resetting may take care of itself.

Daylight Saving Time returns in 2018 on Sunday, March 11.

What you can do over the intervening week is be sure to pick up replacement batteries for your smoke/carbon monoxide detectors, if they are of the kind that take removable batteries. If you’re concerned about the fall hazard inherent in climbing a ladder to work on a ceiling-mounted detector, many local fire departments can point you to ways to find fire-safety assistance.

Many newer models of detectors come with long-life batteries that will not need replacing, though the detectors will still need periodic testing. Also, newer residential construction often includes hard-wired detectors with battery backup.

Rebuilding Together Dutchess County also conducts a free fire safety program for qualified individuals. Application here: http://www.rebuildingtogetherdutchess.org/sites/default/files/PDF/HS%20Application.pdf

NARCAN TRAINING  (OPEN TO THE PUBLIC) (Thu 11/2, 2 sessions)

The opioid crisis has reached epidemic proportions.  The drug narcan (naloxone) can be administered through a simple nasal spray, and works by attaching itself to the opioid receptors in the brain and protecting them from the opioids that were ingested. At this training you will learn how and when to administer narcan and save a person’s life. All trainees receive a free narcan kit at the end of the training. At the Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response, 392 Creek Road, PoughkeepsieThursday, November 2 with sessions at 3 and 7 p.m.. Free, with required registration. Contact Medical Reserve Corps coordinator Joe Ryan for more information: jryan@dutchessny.govor (845) 486-2493.
