Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports that a motorcyclist was seriously injured when his cycle collided with another vehicle in Carmel on Sunday, October 22nd.

According to preliminary reports, Mr. Dwayne L. Cantelmo, aged 44, of Stormville, was riding a 1995 Harley-Davidson motorcycle in a northeasterly direction on U.S. Route 6 at about 5:20 p.m. on Sunday when he allegedly ran a red light at the intersection with New York Route 52 in the Hamlet of Carmel, in front of the Reed Memorial Library. His motorcycle collided with a 2006 Acura sedan being driven by Mr. Michael A. Nieves, aged 33, of Katonah, which was headed in a southerly direction on Route 52 and was turning left to go east on Route 6 with the green light. The motorcycle broadsided the car in the intersection and the impact ejected Mr. Cantelmo from the cycle.

A passersby’s call to 911 brought sheriff’s deputies and emergency medical responders to the scene. Mr. Cantelmo was transported by the Carmel Volunteer Ambulance to the Danbury Hospital in Connecticut, where he was admitted with apparent trauma injuries to his head and right leg. There was no update available on the extent of Mr. Cantelmo’s injuries as of the time of this News Release. Mr. Nieves was not injured in the collision.

Carmel volunteer firefighters and County Fire Police assisted in detouring traffic around the area. The Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services supplied generators and lights to illuminate the scene for investigators. The intersection was closed to traffic for about five hours as deputies and investigators reconstructed the crash and cleared the scene.

No tickets were issued at the scene and the crash remains under investigation.
