A BUSY NOVEMBER

Several events of major interest to Dutchess County seniors are coming up in November.

The Office for the Aging’s annual Senior Seminars are taking place Thursday morning, Nov. 2nd, at the New Hackensack Reformed Church, on Route 376, just south of the Hudson Valley Regional Airport in Wappinger.  The seminars are free to attend but space is limited. Registration is required to get a seat at a seminar; for more information, call the Office for the Aging at (845) 486-2555.  If you have registered previously and are now unable to attend, please let us know so we can free up a space at any of the seminars that could be fully booked. A schedule of seminars is available at the Office for the Aging website: www.dutchessny.gov/aging.

The Office for the Aging will also be on hand Saturday, November 4th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Veterans Appreciation Day, hosted by the Dutchess County Division of Veterans Services, at the Henry A. Wallace Center at the FDR Presidential Library (4079 Albany Post Rd. (Route 9), Hyde Park). Veterans and their families will have the opportunity to learn about services and resources. If you’re a veteran, bring a copy of your full-time active duty discharge papers and photo ID to register for a Dutchess County F.A.V.O.R. discount card. For more information, call the Division of Veterans’ Services at (845) 486-2060.

Coming up on Friday, Nov. 17th from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. is the 13th annual Dutchess County Caregiver’s Conference, held this year at The Grandview, 175 Rinaldi Boulevard in Poughkeepsie. This year’s theme is “Hats Off to Caregivers.” For more information and to register, call 1-800-272-3900.

OFA SPEAKERS ON THE ROAD

Office for the Aging Outreach Coordinator Brian Jones will be giving two “Successful Aging” presentations in mid-November. The first takes place Wednesday, November 15th at 11 a.m. at Temple Beth-El in the City of Poughkeepsie (118 S. Grand Ave.,) then on Thursday the 16th he’ll be at Elks Lodge #2609 in Hopewell Junction (1195 NY 376) at 2:30 p.m.

We’re also in the middle of Medicare open enrollment season, which runs through December 7th. For those approaching the age of 65 who want to know more, there’s a “Medicare 101” class coming up on Tuesday, November 14th at 6:30 p.m. at the Pawling Library (11 Broad St.). Another class will be held on Wednesday, November 15th from 10 a.m. to noon at the Poughkeepsie Galleria community room.

If you have a little computer knowledge and would like help navigating the Medicare website, a “Navigating Medicare” class is taking place on Wednesday, November 22nd at the Adriance Library (93 Market St., Poughkeepsie) at 9:30 a.m.

Space is limited, so please register in advance for any aforementioned class at (845) 486-2555. “Medicare 101” and “Navigating Medicare” are monthly classes held year-round; the classes listed above are the only ones scheduled before the December 7th open-enrollment deadline, though it’s possible we may schedule more.
