Obituary, Loretta F. Figliozzi

Loretta F. Figliozzi, 94, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on September 12, 2017 at The Pines Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Poughkeepsie, NY. She was born on March 4, 1923 in Nashua, New Hampshire to the late Alfred and Irene Charron.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, John J. Figliozzi in 2004 and her sister, Beatrice Sirois.

Loretta attended and graduated from Nashua High School and the St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing in Worcester, Massachusetts during World War II, where she received her certification as a Registered Nurse. It was then that she met her husband who, while serving in the U.S. Navy, was hospitalized there for a time. After a long distance courtship, they were married in Nashua on January 20, 1951. Up to that time, she was employed at a doctor’s office in Nashua.

They settled in East Meadow, NY where Loretta was an obstetrics nurse at Meadowbrook Hospital (now Nassau County Medical Center) until 1953. She, her husband and their family relocated to Pleasant Valley, New York in 1965, where she resided for most of the remainder of her life. She returned to her nursing career in 1972, serving as a charge nurse and floor supervisor at the Dutchess County Infirmary in Millbrook, NY until her retirement in 1992.

Loretta was a faithful communicant at St. Stanislaus Church, Pleasant Valley and enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, travel, conversation, reading, card playing, and assembling complex puzzles. She especially loved chocolate. Among other fond memories, her grandchildren remember her for her long walks and talks with them and for faithfully presenting them with fresh baked brownies whenever they visited. In keeping with her professional medical background, she always stressed to her family the importance of maintaining one’s health, a balanced diet, a good sense of humor and “moderation in all things”. Loretta was blessed with all of these things and more.

She is survived by her two sons, John (Patricia) and Mark (Barbara); her grandchildren Jennifer, Andrew (Maritza), Brett (Wylie), Jason (Joanna) and Ryan; and her great grandchildren, Blake and Frankie.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be no calling hours. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stanislaus Church, Pleasant Valley, NY at 10:00 am on Friday, September 15. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Poughkeepsie, NY. The Family would like to extend its sincere appreciation to the 6th floor staff at The Pines for the exceptional care provided to Loretta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
