Hudson Valley Reflections by Michael Adamovic

Discover the natural and architectural wonders that abound along New York’s Hudson River Valley in this lavishly illustrated travel and field guide. The unique scenery, fauna and wildlife, and architecture of the valley, from Sleepy Hollow near New York City north to the town of Catskill, are showcased through 150 color photos. Brief essays relate the majesty of the four seasons in the valley, its waterfalls, bogs, people, history, and more. Whether it’s learning about the recovery of bald eagles or the region’s rare orchids, taking a tour through a historic Gilded-Age mansion, or rambling to the top of a legendary mountain said to be the abode of mischievous imps, it will be hard, if not impossible, to avoid falling “under the sway of some witching power” that Washington Irving believed pervades this remarkable land. Includes a map with 40 locations worth visiting and driving directions.

Mike Adamovic has had numerous photographs and articles featured in a wide array of publications, ranging from the NYS Conservationist magazine to A.T. Journeys. He spends his days running his photography business, Adamovic Nature Photography.

Hudson Valley Curiosities
by Allison Guertin Marchese
Hudson Valley is steeped in mysteries, from Celtic chambers resting in the deep woods of Putnam to Millbrook’s abandoned Bennett College. In the Highlands, Iroquois chief Daniel Nimham gave his life for the cause of American independence. One strange night in the Catskills, a legendary playwright miraculously survived a midnight plunge off the suspended Schoharie Bridge. The great passenger steamship Swallow sank near the shores of Athens. Author Allison Guertin Marchese reveals a treasure-trove of curious tales recounting the most uncommon history of bad guys, bold girls, creepy colleges, missing mastodons and more in this wondrous region of New York.
Allison Guertin Marchese works as a fundraiser and grant writer for various non-profits in her area. She is also a freelance writer and has published articles in local newspapers such as the Chatham Press, the Chatham Times and the Women’s Courier on historical subjects ranging from local Shaker communities to ghosts. She has worked as a researcher and publicist for the Shaker Museum.
The Tale of the Tail by Susan Howard
“The Tale of the Tail” is a simple children’s picture book in rhyme format about different animals and the differences in their tails. It is intended for children from three years of age and up. Illustrations are of animals and their tails in colorful collage style.

Susan Howard
author of “The Tale of the Tail” has written feature stories for a weekly newspaper and has published various of her poems. She plans to publish a collection of her poetry. She also plans sequels to this first of her children’s books. As a student in Florence, Italy, she wrote a piece to be published at home in the United States, detailing the catastrophe of the flood in 1966, when the Arno River overflowed. The idea of writing “The Tale of the Tail” came to her while she was substitute teaching in a school district in Florida. Howard has also written, produced and performed in her own one-woman tribute show, with song and comedy.
ORVIS GAME FAIR & SPORTING WEEKEND

The Orvis Game Fair and Sporting Weekend—a fun and exciting outing for the whole family—will be held at Sandanona Shooting Grounds in Millbrook, New York, on September 16 & 17, 2017, between the hours of 9 AM and 5 PM. Just a short drive north of New York City, Sandanona in autumn is the perfect place in the perfect time of year to enjoy the beautiful and historic Hudson Valley.

Beyond their pastoral beauty, however, the Sandanona Grounds is a singular place with historical significance. Going there is like taking a step back in time, to a place where the traditions of the field and the hunt are held in the highest regard, and where wingshooting is a passion that links the past with the present. This venerable sporting institution is the oldest permitted shooting preserve in the country, so old in fact, that the main lodge was built during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson.

All around the Sandanona property, you’ll find artists and craftsmen at work, more than 70 of the finest exhibitors and vendors, and many events for kids and adults. A few highlights of the weekend are fly-fishing demonstrations, dog-training seminars, birds of prey exhibitions, a variety of hands-on youth programs, and a Land Rover driving course.

Come join us! This is an excellent opportunity to try your hand at shooting or casting a fly rod. Expert instructors will be onsight offering free fly-casting lessons and the opportunity to shoot under their watchful eye in a fun, safe environment. This is the perfect time and place to introduce the whole family to these lifelong pursuits. Plus, you can enter to win Orvis clothing, dog beds, and more!
