SENIOR PROM DISCOUNT DEADLINE APPROACHES

Friday, September 15th, will be your last chance to obtain discounted tickets to the annual Dutchess County Senior Prom to be held on Monday, October 16th from noon until 4 p.m. at the Villa Borghese (70 Widmer Rd., Wappingers Falls). The Prom is once again co-hosted by the Pines at Poughkeepsie. The theme this year is “School Days,” and attendees are encouraged to dress in the colors of their high schools and/or colleges. The full Bob Martinson Band will provide the entertainment, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to win great prizes. Sponsors for the Senior Prom include Wingate Healthcare, EverCare At Home, Hudson Cadillac Buick GMC, Hamaspik Choice, MVP Health Care, and the Dutchess County Department of Community and Family Services.

Early registration is available for $20 per person, for those whose payment is received or postmarked by September 15th; after that date, the charge is $30. Those who wish to sit together must send their payment in together. For those of you coming in a larger group and trying to figure out seating, each table seats 10 attendees. Please be sure to include the names of everyone you are paying for, along with your contact information (phone and/or email) and send your check to: Dutchess County Office for the Aging, 27 High Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. The prom sells out every year, so get your reservations in early.

A printable prom sign-up form is available at the Office for the Aging website, www.dutchessny.gov/aging, and it will also be printed in the fall edition of the “Spotlight on Seniors,” due out shortly.

Setting up for the prom takes a lot of people-power. If you’d like to volunteer to help on the day of the prom, or if you’d like information about the prom committee, please contact Office for the Aging Outreach Coordinator Brian Jones at (845) 486-2555 orbjones@dutchessny.gov.

LAST CALL FOR “A MATTER OF BALANCE” AUTUMN SESSIONS?

We have a handful of spaces left in the “A Matter of Balance” classes taking place this autumn in Dover Plains; autumn classes at all other Dutchess locations are booked solid.

If you are over 60, ambulatory, can problem-solve, and are concerned about falling, or have fallen before and would rather that not happen again, get in touch with the Office for the Aging at (845) 486-2555 or toll-free (866) 486-2555 from the 518/838 area code.

If we couldn’t fit you into a class this fall, we’ll be filling spots in our spring 2018 sessions with names from our waiting list.

Many thanks once again to Health Quest for their continued support.

START SEPTEMBER WITH FREE MUSIC AT WILDERSTEIN

The Rhinebeck Chamber Music Society is presenting a free outdoor concert at the Wilderstein Historic Site (330 Morton Rd., Rhinebeck) this coming Saturday, September 9 at 2 p.m., featuring soprano Celine Mogielnicki. The program will feature early English and Italian Baroque period music. Bring your own seating; for more information, go to www.wilderstein.org or www.rcmsmusic.org.

FREE COMPUTER CLASSES IN PAWLING

The Pawling Free Library is the recipient of a 2017 MHLS Outreach Mini Grant Program grant which will be used to offer free computer classes in the fall. The classes are geared toward seniors and adults. The grant funds are provided by the New York State Library Division of Library Development. Classes will take place Sundays or Wednesdays at 2:30 PM. Registration is required. Please call the Pawling Library at 845-855-3444 to register, or send an email to Donald at adult@pawlinglibrary.org.

FREE CHAIR YOGA FOR SENIORS (55+) COMES TO TIVOLI

Six weekly sessions of free Monday chair yoga classes will be taking place on the third floor of Tivoli Village Hall (86 Broadway),12:30 – 1:30 p.m., starting on Monday, September 18. The classes are free but space is limited and registration is required; call the Tivoli library at 845-757-3771 to register. You must commit to the full six weeks of classes to be accepted; there is no class on Columbus Day (October 9).

Chair yoga incorporates both seated and standing yoga poses using a chair for support. Students will be guided through a series of stretches and postures that are modified to accommodate those with limited mobility and difficulty balancing. We work on building strength, flexibility, and balance as we explore the many aspects of yoga. An additional benefit of yoga is reduced stress and an ability to calm the mind using breathing and meditation techniques. Each class concludes with a final relaxation or guided meditation. The classes are taught by area yoga instructor Barbara Eichin, who has been studying and practicing yoga for over twenty years.

This yoga series is happening thanks to a Mid-Hudson Library System Mini-Grant.

QIGONG COMMUNITY CLASSES STARTING IN RHINEBECK THIS SATURDAY (9/9)

Qigong classes will get underway at the Starr Library (68 W. Market St.) on Saturday, September 9 at 10 a.m.

This is an ALL LEVEL class including chair Qigong. Steven Michael Pague will be teaching the classes every Saturday morning outside as weather permits. Classes meet by the back door to the library. In case of inclement weather, class will be held in the Community Room. For more information, call the library at 845-876-4030.
