Sheriff Smith and NYPD Chief Mike Shea have been selected to receive the the FBI National Academy Associates 2018 John Fahy Award for their humanitarianism through out their careers.

In 2006 the FBI National Academy Associate, New York State/E. Canada Chapter chose to officially honor Inspector Fahy with the creation of an award committee consisting of non-Board Members dedicated to selecting outstanding nominees for the JOHN FAHY MEMORIALHUMANITARIAN AWARD.

To Qualify for the Award: Nominees must meet the following criteria: The person embodies a high moral character and demonstrates exemplary performance in law enforcement; Performs an act or engages in sustained conduct consistent with the demeanor of a selfless person who is dedicated to improving the condition of humankind and often makes sacrifices to benefit the greater good, without expectation of acknowledgement; Makes significant contributions to their community through their time, actions, talents and dedication. These contributions may consist of, by are not limited to: volunteerism in organizations, participating in a specific community project, unpaid service on committees, youth service programs, religious groups, etc.; or, Any act of volunteerism that would bring honor on the law enforcement community in general, and in particular, the F.B.I. National Academy.

Sheriff Smith’s nomination was submitted by members of the Sheriff’s Department who have graduated from the F.B.I.National Academy.

The Sheriff’s nomination covered his military career including graduation from West Point, service in Vietnam and subsequent promotion to Brigadier General. Sheriff Smith’s community work was also listed in the nomination:

Donald B. Smith has been committed to giving his time and leadership experience to the people of Putnam County and beyond. Sheriff Smith spends countless hours attending community events speaking to audiences large and small. Sheriff Smith has served as President of the Westchester/Putnam Council of the Boy Scouts of America, President of the Mental Health Association of Putnam County, and President of the New York State Sheriff’s Association. Sheriff Smith currently serves as the Chairman of the Legislative Committee of the New York State Sheriff’s Association and as a Trustee on the Executive Board. Sheriff Smith also serves on the Board of Directors of the American Security Council Foundation, which promotes the military concept and strategy of “Peace Through Strength” and is currently the Chairman of the Board.

 

Sheriff Smith was presented the award by Lieutenant William J. Carbone at the Sheriff’s Office on June 13^th.
