Pawling Library Wins Grant for Teen Programming
The Young Adult Program Coordinator, Kate Lambert, is one of 64 teachers and librarians from across the country who have been awarded an Ezra Jack Keats Mini-Grant to fund an inventive program for students. The Ezra Jackson Keats Foundation, is an organization which supports literacy and creative expression in children.
To qualify for this award, an educator must apply to the foundation with a proposal for a specific program designed to foster creative expression, working together and interaction with a diverse community.
With her mini-grant, Ms. Lambert will conduct a teen zine making program at the library over the summer. Teens will learn about zines and the history of self-publishing, and will be encouraged to take leadership roles such as editor, creative director, and copy editor. At the end of the summer, teens will have a finished product to bring home and to distribute to the community. The zines will feature teen art and creative writing. Teens will participate in two creative writing workshops, one in poetry and one in prose. They will make their own collages using magazines, art supplies, and donated “found” objects like product boxes, ribbons, CDs, fabric scraps, and yarn. Historically, many zines have featured collage and bricolage. This program will allow teens to express themselves creatively, and the resulting art and writing will be representative of the diverse group of teens who spend time at the Pawling Library
