Explosives Recovered in Philipstown

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the recovery of a quantity of explosives and blasting caps from a wooded lot in the Town of Philipstown.

On February 19, 2017 at 2:07 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office received a call from a Philipstown man who owns a commercial lot on Route 9 in the Town of Philipstown. He reported that he had found approximately 10 pounds of trinitrotoluene (TNT) and a quantity of blasting caps in an old trailer located on the property. The man said that he discovered the items while clearing the property and that he believed the items belonged to the former owner of the parcel, now thought to be deceased, who had owned a blasting company.

After Deputy Sheriff Alfred Pizzuto secured the scene, the Westchester County Police Bomb Squad responded to the location to safely remove and dispose of the items.
