Putnam County Undersheriff Peter H. Convery Passes Away Suddenly

It is with profound sorrow that Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith announces the sudden passing today (Tuesday) of Undersheriff Peter H. Convery.

Undersheriff Convery, aged 65, died after suffering an apparent heart attack at his home in Mahopac at about 8:30 A.M. today. Paramedics, sheriff’s deputies and first responders tried to resuscitate him and rushed him to the Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel, where doctors and nurses joined in their valiant but unsuccessful efforts to revive him. Undersheriff Convery was pronounced dead at about 9:30 A.M.

“We are all absolutely heartbroken,” said Sheriff Smith. “Peter was a loving and devoted family man, who adored his wife Luanne and their children Caitlin, Courtney, Kerry, Tara and Connor, and their children’s families. And he was a very good friend to me.”

“Peter spent most of his adult life giving of himself in conscientious public service to the community and in volunteer activities for many worthy causes. So many, many people liked Peter and loved Peter and we will all miss him very, very much,” said the Sheriff.

Undersheriff Convery began his career with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office in 2002, after a long career with the Westchester County Department of Corrections, where he retired as a captain. His entire law enforcement career spanned over 40 years.

Undersheriff Convery was also a long-time member of the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department and was an active Rotarian. He was a parishioner of Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Mahopac for many years.

An announcement concerning wake calling hours and funeral arrangements will follow.
