A BUSY NOVEMBER

Three events of major interest to Dutchess County seniors are coming up in November, and two of them are taking place this week.

Eleven of the Office for the Aging’s annual Senior Seminars are taking place this Thursday morning, Nov. 3, at the New Hackensack Reformed Church, on Route 376, just south of the Dutchess County Airport in Wappinger.  The seminars are free to attend but registration is required; to register for a seminar, or for more information, call the Office for the Aging at 845-486-2555.  If you have registered previously and are now unable to attend, please let us know so we can free up a space at any of the seminars that could be fully booked.

Also on the way this week is the second annual “Thriving in Rhinebeck,” a free showcase of services and resources for older adults, presented by Rhinebeck@Home on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Office for the Aging will be there along with many local organizations, including health care and home care organizations, cultural and educational groups, transportation services and many civic groups that serve older adults. If you have any questions, call 845-876-4663 or email Rhinebeckathome2016@gmail.com.

Coming up on Friday, Nov. 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. is the 12th annual Dutchess County Caregiver’s Conference, held this year at The Grandview, 175 Rinaldi Boulevard in Poughkeepsie. This year’s theme is “Caregiving: Learning to Dance in the Rain.” For more information and to register, call 1-800-272-3900 by November 11.

SUCCESSFUL AGING GOES RURAL

OFA Outreach Coordinator Brian Jones presents two more of his “Succesful Aging” presentations in the first half of November, focusing on the needs of seniors in rural Dutchess County. He’ll be at the North East / Millerton Library (75 Main St., Millerton) on Thursday, November 10 at noon, and at the Pleasant Plains Presbyterian Church (2 Fiddlers Bridge Rd., Staatsburg) on Tuesday, November 15 at 11 a.m. You’ll be able to learn how to maximize your opportunity to live safely and happily in your own home for as long as is possible.

If your civic organization, house of worship or senior group would like to arrange a “Successful Aging” presentation, call 845-486-2555 or email bjones@dutchessny.gov.

CONGRATS TO THE 2016 DUKE AND DUCHESS

This year’s 21st annual Office for the Aging Senior Prom, presented Oct. 17 in conjunction with The Pines at Poughkeepsie, was a great afternoon out for over 350 seniors who filled the dance floor at Villa Borghese in Wappingers Falls to the music of the Bob Martinson Band. Larry Wagner and Helene Gross were named this year’s Duke and Duchess of the Prom.

Many thanks to the Prom’s platinum sponsors: Wingate Healthcare, EverCare, Hudson Cadillac Buick GMC, Zounds Hearing, Helping Other People Everywhere, Toll Brothers, Hamaspik Choice, TEG Federal Credit Union, and Avalon Assisted Living and Wellness Center.

“A MATTER OF BALANCE” GETS READY FOR 2017

Fall classes have just wrapped up for “A Matter of Balance,” the award-winning evidence-based balance improvement program now entering its third year of operation in Dutchess County, and now the Office for the Aging is accepting a limited number of applicants for late winter/spring 2017 classes in Dover Plains, Pleasant Valley, Rhinebeck, City and Town of Poughkeepsie, Town of Fishkill, and Village of Wappingers Falls. Additionally, if there is sufficient enrollment interest there may be “A Matter of Balance” classes in Beekman and Millerton as well. Classes are limited to a maximum of 14 participants and a minimum of 8 participants. Each class consists of eight two-hour sessions. For more information, call (845)486-2555. Participants must be age 60 or older, ambulatory and able to problem-solve. “A Matter of Balance” is made possible with support from Health Quest.

READY, PET, GO

The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) of Dutchess County is offering a Pet Preparedness program this Thursday, November 3, at 7 p.m. at the Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response, 392 Creek Road in Poughkeepsie. Whether you’ve got just one cat or a whole herd of livestock, a plan for what to do in the event of an emergency affecting your animals should be a key consideration, especially with winter approaching. The Dutchess County Animal Response Team, part of the county’s Department of Emergency Response, will present their work and provide information on how to include animals in personal emergency preparedness planning. You’ll also get pet first aid tips from Paula Benjamin of Health Quest Community Education, who has worked in the veterinary field for more than 16 years.

It’s a free event, but seating is limited so registration is required. Call MRC coordinator Joe Ryan to find out more, at (845) 486-2493, or email jryan@dutchessny.gov.
