Dutchess County Historic Tavern Trail Continues
Dutch’s Spirits in Pine Plains on October 28th
Poughkeepsie, NY… The Dutchess County Historic Tavern Trail series continues at Dutch’s Spirits, located at 98 Ryan Road in Pine Plains, on Friday, October 28th, at 6 p.m. The Historic Tavern Trail brings history and local cuisine together, while introducing the community to iconic locales, with each installment held at different historic location featuring a brief presentation on the site’s history.
Dutch’s Spirits stands on the site of a Prohibition-era distillery operated by infamous New York City gangster Dutch Schultz. He rented a farm on the outskirts of Pine Plains with easy access to the main train lines running through town and employed local labor to make liquor to sell in the metropolis. The distilling operations occurred mostly underground, with a warren of tunnels providing cover from prying eyes and escape routes, which came in handy during the two federal raids on the site. Following the repeal of the 18thAmendment in 1933, which ended Prohibition, the site returned to its original farm operations. Dutch’s Spirits was founded in 2010 and now offers a variety programming for the public, including regular tastings of local spirits.
This installment of the Tavern Trail will explore Dutchess County during the Prohibition Era, featuring a presentation by noted historian Ellie Charwat at 6:30 p.m. At 7:15 pm, Chester Freeman of Got2Lindy Dance Studios will demonstrate period swing dancing, including the 1920s Charleston and the 1930s Lindy Hop. The Farmers & Chefs Food Truck will be on site to provide refreshments accompanying tastings offered by Dutch’s Spirits.
Dutchess County Historian William P. Tatum III said, “The Dutchess County Historic Tavern Trail highlights many of our iconic buildings and the history contained in our epic landscape. These programs are a fun way to explore the links between history, cuisine, and local culture that make our area such a vibrant place.”
The Tavern Trail is a collaborative endeavor between the Dutchess County Department of History, the Dutchess County Historical Society, and local historical societies to create an innovative program that highlights the county’s rich history. The final Tavern Trail program for 2016 will convene at the Beekman Arms in Rhinebeck on Friday, November 11th, at 6 p.m.
