SECOND OFFICE FOR THE AGING PUBLIC HEARING THIS WEDNESDAY

The Office of the Aging holds two public hearings each year to hear residents’ concerns and get feedback on current services and future plans. The second of this year’s hearings takes place this Wednesday morning, October 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the South Amenia Friendship Center, located at the South Amenia Presbyterian Church, 229 South Amenia Rd. in Wassaic. If you will not be able to attend, and were not able to attend last week’s first hearing at St. Simeon II in Poughkeepsie, you can mail comments to the Dutchess County Office for the Aging, 27 High St., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601, or email comments to ofa@dutchessny.gov.

 

SUCCESSFUL AGING PRESENTATIONS IN RED HOOK, POUGHKEEPSIE

One Office for the Aging presentation on “Successful Aging” is scheduled for Wednesday, October 12 at 11 a.m. at the Red Hook Senior Center at 59 Fisk St., and another takes place on Tuesday, October 18 at 11 a.m. at the Red Hook Public Library, 7444 South Broadway (Route 9).

Also, the Town of Poughkeepsie Senior Center at 14 Abe’s Way will host a “Successful Aging” presentation at noon on Thursday, October 20.

FALL “SPOTLIGHT ON SENIORS” ARRIVING SOON

The latest issue of the Dutchess County Office for the Aging’s quarterly “Spotlight on Seniors” newsletter is arriving soon, if not already, in mailboxes and email inboxes throughout Dutchess County. The fall issue of the “Spotlight” includes vital information on this year’s Medicare open-enrollment period, which runs from October 15 to December 7; a complete listing of area law-enforcement organizations that are able to accept your expired and unwanted medications; tips on how seniors of all mobility levels can safely enjoy fall hikes in Dutchess County, and a look ahead at November’s popular annual “Senior Seminars” at New Hackensack Reformed Church in Wappingers Falls.

MEDICAL RESERVE CORPS ANNOUNCES OVERDOSE-PREVENTION SEMINAR (Thu 10/6)

A handful of seats are left for this Thursday’s (10/6) seminar presented by the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) of Dutchess County on the ongoing heroin and opiate addiction crisis affecting the Hudson Valley, including a lesson on how to administer the overdose antidote Narcan.  The seminar will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Department of Emergency Response, 392 Creek Road in Poughkeepsie. Marie Dynes of the Dutchess County Department of Behavior and Community Health will explain the rise of heroin and opiates in the Hudson Valley and lead the Narcan-administration instruction.  If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to (845)486-2493 as soon as possible.

RSVP ANNOUNCES WINNERS

The Retired Senior and Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Dutchess County sends along its thanks to everybody who bought raffle tickets this year to support its ongoing efforts to provide volunteer assistance to local non-profit agencies.

The $1000 grand prize winner was Maureen Hanrahan of Hopewell Junction. The winners of the Foam & Wash RainX Booklets valued at $75.00 each were Matilda Brooks and Lucy Eshelman. Kerry Oliver, from Beacon, was the winner of the Regal Cinemas gift cards. Doreen Shepheard, an RSVP Volunteer at Meals on Wheels – Wappingers Falls, was the lucky winner of a $40 gift certificate donated by The Tomato Café in Fishkill.

RSVP is continuing to seek volunteers age 55 and over for a wide array of community service activities including delivering meals to shut-ins, providing transportation to the elderly for shopping and medical visits, income tax preparation, becoming an ombudsman and advocating for patient rights, and transporting veterans to medical appointments.
