Why I became a Forest Ranger – – Lieutenant David Pachan, Region 4 Capital Region

forest ranger

“It’s something I wanted to do early on in life. I went to Wanakena Ranger School in ’97 and then to ESF in Syracuse, where I got a bachelor’s degree.

I’ve always enjoyed the outdoors. I love hiking, fishing and camping. I thought what better way to spend my career than doing something I like to do while I’m recreating? That’s why I chose this job. At the same time, we help people. We help protect the state’s natural resources for many generations to come. It’s a very, very rewarding job. I don’t really consider it a job. It’s fun.”

What is the most rewarding part of the job?

“Nothing is better than when you can help someone who needs it the most, whether they are lost or injured in the woods or helping someone out because they have a complaint.”
