Obituary, Mary L. Carter

 

Mary L. Carter – GREAT FALLS, VA – Mary Liner Carter, a resident for many years of The Landings on Skidaway Island, passed away on August 20, 2016, in Great Falls, Virginia, where she had been living at Brightview Assisted Living Community. Mary was born February 8, 1923 in Amenia, N.Y. to Hugh and Flora Liner; she was one of six children. She graduated from Amenia High School and attended the White Plains Hospital School of Nursing. After graduation, she enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and served for a year and a half, eight months of which were spent in Japan and Tinian. In 1946, she married John H. Hanrahan Jr., a lawyer in New York City, who predeceased her in 1967; they had three children, Linda, Nancy, and John, and lived for many years in Westfield, N.J., with annual August vacations spent at the Hanrahan family farmhouse in Addison, N.Y. In 1973, Mary married James L. Carter, who had a son, Craig. Mary and Jim lived in Westfield; Jim worked as a senior research associate at Exxon, and Mary worked as a nurse at the Westfield Orthopedic Group. They retired in 1985 to The Landings, where they enjoyed golfing, boating, traveling, playing bridge, picnicking along the river, and spending time with their many cherished friends. They spent their summers in Addison and at a fishing camp on Charleston Lake in Ontario, Canada. Mary is survived by one brother, Paul Liner, of West Haven, CT; three children, Linda Hanrahan of Vestal, NY, Nancy Hanrahan Kayatta of Vienna, VA, and John Hanrahan of Ithaca, NY; one stepson, Craig Carter of Denver, CO; eight grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. A funeral mass will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Addison, N.Y.; interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to St. Catherine’s Church.
