Obituary, Joellyn Toler

 

DUESBERRY–Joellyn Toler, 72, plein air painter of Greenwood Village, CO, and Millbrook, NY, on August 5. Born in Richmond, VA, Joellyn received a BA from Smith College and Masters from NYU Institute of Fine Arts. Joellyn painted in the tradition of the Hudson River School in scenic places such as Millbrook, Mount Desert Island, Santa Fe and Europe. Her work is in museums, including the National September 11 Memorial, and private collections and was featured in a 2011 retrospective and 2004 documentary. Joellyn was a member of the Century Association. The Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, houses her papers and primary records. Joellyn is survived by her husband, Ira J. Kowal of Greenwood Village; sister Pat Washoe of Richmond; stepdaughters Rebekah Kowal (Dave), Iowa City; Jessica Kowal (Blaine), Seattle; four grandchildren. Memorial will be planned.
