FRANKFORT – Mrs. Una M. Jaquish, age 85, passed away on Sunday, July 3, 2016, at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center.
Born in Peasleeville, NY, on November 20, 1930, Una was the daughter of the late Walter C. and Florence E. (Shambo) Furnia. She was raised and educated in Ausable Forks, attending Holy Name Catholic School and graduating from Ausable Forks High School. She went on to attend Champlain Valley School of Nursing in Plattsburgh, as well as Albany Business College and MVCC, where she earned her degree as a Medical Assistant.
In October of 1954, Una was wed to Mr. Gerald E. Jaquish in Amenia, NY, and the two shared in a blessed union of almost forty years, until Mr. Jaquish’s passing in 1993. Una began her career with the Wassaic State School, where she worked from 1953-1955. She went on to practice as a Medical Assistant for two local physicians for many years until her retirement in 1974.
Una was a woman of many talents and hobbies and, in her spare time, she enjoyed arts and crafts, reading, square dancing, taking walks, and playing bridge at the old Hotel Utica. She was also an avid bowler, participating in two “A” leagues as a Captain, and was proud of accomplishing two 600 games. Her skills in the kitchen were evident through her baked goods, which she would share with church members, family and friends alike.
Her involvement in the community was evident through her various memberships and affiliations. She was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Ilion, a former member of the St. John’s Altar Guild in Utica, and a former President and Treasurer of the Frankfort Altar Rosary Society. Una was very devoted to her Cathoic faith and was formerly a parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Apostles in Frankfort and Church of the Annunciation in Ilion. Most recently, she attended mass at Historic Old St. John’s Church in Utica, where she also served as a Eucharistic Minister.
Una will be remembered by those she leaves behind, including her daughters, Florence Wheelock and her husband, Daryle, of Ilion, and Mary Sands, of Oklahoma; her sons, Daniel Jaquish, of Oklahoma, and George Jaquish, of Little Falls; her daughter-in-law, Barbara (Viti) Jaquish, of Frankfort; her foster children, whom she raised, Leo Kelly and Steve Miller, both of Ilion; her grandchildren, Daniel J. Jaquish, of California, Danielle Jaquish, of Frankfort, and Sam Sands and Rebecca Sands, both of Oklahoma; and two great-grandchildren.
