Sheriff’s Office investigates one-car fatality in the Town of North East

The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office reports the investigation into a one-car fatal crash which occurred on Sharon Rd. in the Town of North East at approximately 5:35 am on 6/19/16.

On the above date and time Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Sharon Rd. near Maple Ave. in the Town of North East in response to a Dutchess County 911 dispatch for an auto accident. Upon arrival Aubrey N. Schmitt, age 26 of Canaan CT, was observed lying near the vehicle with serious injuries. Ms. Schmitt was given emergency care however was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that a 2005 Nissan Altima operated by Ms. Schmitt was traveling westbound on Sharon Rd. when the operator lost control. The vehicle then left the roadway, struck an embankment, and rolled over at which time the operator was ejected. At this time alcohol involvement is suspected, and the investigation into the crash is continuing by the Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit. Ms. Schmitt was the only occupant of the vehicle and was not wearing a seatbelt.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Millerton Fire Department and the Dutchess County Medical Examiner’s Office. More information may be released as it becomes available.
