Hudson Data Jam Awards Expo Features Creative Work by Regional Students
Family-friendly event to be held at Marist College Student Center, Saturday, June 18
(Millbrook, NY) The public is invited to attend the third annual Hudson Data Jam Awards Expo. Support regional students while learning about the Hudson River in this unique event that combines river science and data interpretation with creative communication. Developed by educators at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, the Awards Expo will be held at the Marist College Student Center from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, June 18th.
A panel of scientists, educators, and artists are currently judging the Hudson Data Jam submissions. At the Awards Expo the top middle-school and high-school projects will be revealed. Expo attendees will have the opportunity to view projects, interact with students, vote on a People’s Choice Award, and enjoy light refreshments.
More than 150 students in grades 6-12 took part in this year’s Hudson Data Jam, with representation from Arlington High School, Rombout Middle School, Saugerties High School, Ossining HIgh School, Woodlands High School, the Chapin School, Wallkill Senior High School, Fox Land Middle School, Oakwood Friends School, Poughkeepsie High School, Hark Meadow Montessori School, Stissing Mountain Middle School, Marymount School of New York, Woodstock Day School, Poughkeepsie Day School, Millbrook Middle School, Wagner Middle School, FDR High School, and Beacon High School.
Movies, original songs, dioramas, and a puppet show were among the projects submitted. In addition to their creative work, participants will also share a poster that includes the Hudson River data set used, graphs that capture data trends and/or comparisons, and an outreach plan for communicating their science story to the general public.
The Hudson Data Jam was made possible through generous funding from the Jean W. Nuhn Charitable Trust. Marist College is sponsoring the event by providing both a location for the Awards Expo and technical support for the electronic submission process.
