Obituary, Mary “Joy” Bauer

 

Millbrook – Mary “Joy” Bauer, 91, passed away on April 1, 2016. Mary Joy Bauer was a longtime resident of Poughkeepsie though she resided at The Fountains at Millbrook Retirement Community since 1986. At the Fountains, Joy taught woodcarving to the residents and was involved in many of the community’s activities. Born July 16, 1924 in Rochester, NY, she was the daughter of Frank and Frances Bauer. She graduated from Cortland State Teachers College in 1947 with a BS in Physical Education. She also pursued graduate work at Syracuse University and the State College at Albany. Miss Bauer taught physical education in the Hyde Park Central School District from 1955 until her retirement in 1979. She had previously taught in Hillsdale, NY and Weedsport, NY. Miss Bauer was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, an international honorary teacher’s society, and served as a past president of the local chapter. She was also a member of the National Retired Teachers Association and the Dutchess County Retired Teachers Association.

Miss Bauer was a member of the National Wood Carvers Association and a life member of the Hudson Valley Wood Carvers where she served as president in 1979 and 1986. In 2006, Miss Bauer received the Dutchess County Volunteer award from The Office of the Aging.

Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 20, 2016 at 12 Noon from St. Joseph-Immaculate Conception Church, 15 North Ave. Millbrook, NY 12545 with Rev. Msgr. Gerardo J. Colacicco, officiating. A reception will follow immediately following at The Fountains in Millbrook. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at Old St. Bridget’s Cemetery in Copake Falls, NY. Memorial contributions may be sent to Project Hope or The American Parkinson Disease Association.
