Dutchess County Office for the Aging

SUPER CENTENARIANS…AND ONE SUPERCENTERNARIAN

Dutchess County’s oldest living resident, 111-year-old Vera Van Wagner, is among the honorees scheduled to be present at the Office for the Aging’s annual “Celebration of Aging” coming up Monday, May 16 at Villa Borghese, 70 Widmer Rd. in Wappingers.  Vera, who turns 112 in late May, is currently the 49th-oldest person in the world! Also being honored at the event are all county residents reaching birthday 100 and beyond during 2016, along with couples married 70 years or more and the Senior Citizens of the Year.  A few seats still remain for the luncheon.  Tickets are $40 per person, with registration in advance required. THEY’RE WALKIN’, YES INDEED

Spring’s in full swing now, and the Office for the Aging’s Senior Walking and Biking groups will be out on the Dutchess Rail Trail and Walkway over the Hudson until the end of November. The groups meet on Tuesdays at 9 a.m. at the entrance to the Walkway on Washington St. in Poughkeepsie, and on Fridays at 9 a.m. on the Rail Trail in the back parking lot of Gold’s Gym on Route 55 in LaGrange. Volunteers are needed to be co-leaders of both groups, and if you’re interested you can contact the Office for the Aging at 845-486-2555.

LONG-TERM CARE OMBUDSMAN PROGRAM NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

If you can put in two hours a week volunteering to help resolve issues affecting residents of long-term care facilities in Dutchess County, the state Long-Term Care Ombudsman office is looking for your help. After training and certification you would educate, empower and advocate on behalf of residents of nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and family-type homes. GET BACK YOUR BACK TODAY (5/9)

Northern Dutchess Hospital physical therapy assistant Larry Flowers will present “Back School,” a back health education class, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, May 9 in the boardroom of the hospital, 6511 Springbrook Ave. in Rhinebeck. Participants will learn how to avoid common mistakes that lead to strains and other muscle aches. You’ll also learn proper lifting and bending techniques that can minimize the chance of future pain or injury. Pawling Elementary School’s Stone Soup Committee is planning an event called “Making Memories with Grandparents” on Friday, May 20 at 6:30 p.m.They’re looking for “craft” volunteers to help new participants prepare for an event aimed at strengthening connections between Pawling grandparents and grandchildren. MOBILE “LA CLINÍCA” CLINIC ROLLS INTO PINE PLAINS TODAY (5/9)

A free mobile clinic will be set up from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. Monday afternoon in the parking lot next to the Pine Plains Laundromat at Memorial Hall on Route 199. LIFELONG LEARNING ALL MONTH IN DUTCHESS, STARTING TODAY (5/9)

The Marist College Center for Lifetime Study begins their Spring Lecture Series today at 2:00 p.m. at Wingate in Fishkill, 3 Summit Court, with a talk by center president James O’Shea on the history of early business and industry in Dutchess County. MIDDLE-STAGE ALZHEIMER’S CAREGIVERS GET HELP IN RED HOOK

The Red Hook Public Library is hosting a three-part educational event for caregivers of those with middle-stage Alzheimer’s disease on the next three Thursdays in May – the 12th, 19th and 26th, all at 4:30 p.m. Register in advance by calling the library at 845-758-3241. If you want to know more about making yourself and your home ready for emergencies, come by the Pine Plains Community Center, 7775 Main St., this Thursday, May 12, at 7:00 p.m. for the latest Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response Citizens Preparedness Training event. Two other sessions are also taking place this month: on May 19 at the Beekman Fire Department, and on May 26 at Amenia Town Hall.
